Saturday was
another rest day for us. In the afternoon, Joni and Dave’s son, Sean, came over
to visit with us. He brought along his son, Judah (8 yrs old), and we had some
fun playing cards, eating pizza and checking out some of Judah’s favorite You
Tube videos.
Sunday was a
travel day (as many of the coming days will be) as we begin our return trip to
the west. Dave made another tasty breakfast with the lamb sausage from
Findlay’s and we were ready for the day ahead. We said our reluctant goodbyes
and jumped back into the car for some more driving.
Joni and Dave
were very generous hosts and Mike really helped Karen out with her iPad
situation. Mike’s house sale closed on Friday, so he’s scheduled to leave for
Nevada this coming Wednesday. It may even be possible for us to see him again on
our way back, depending upon how our schedule works out. We had a great time in
Batavia. Thanks, Joni and Dave!
Before we
knew it, we’d crossed the state line and we were in Indiana. Right at the
border was a sign reminding us that Benjamin Harrison (erstwhile President of
the U.S.) was a native son. A few miles later, we passed north of the town of
Milan, IN which is where a high school basketball team once had a miracle
season and inspired the well-known sports movie, ‘Hoosiers’. We also saw
several new RV’s being transported – probably newly manufactured at one of the
many RV factories located in northern Indiana near Elkhart.
In the
afternoon, we crossed over into the ‘Land of Lincoln’. While Alison was going
to school in Peoria, we got a chance to explore many of the places frequented
by Abraham Lincoln and it felt good to be back in the warm embrace of the
heartland.
Our
destination for the night, Effingham, is a place we’d never heard of before
today. It’s right on I-70. The Camp Lakeland RV Resort backs up to Lake
Pauline, which is a small horseshoe-shaped lake. The local Wal Mart is about a
half mile away. We stopped there first to get supplies.
Dinner
tonight was Atlantic salmon, a product of Chile (don’t ask me how Atlantic
salmon get caught in a country that borders the Pacific Ocean) and it actually
tasted pretty good after spending some time on the BBQ grill. This evening, we
sat outside at a campsite for the first time in a week or so, taking advantage
of the relatively low humidity, the relatively cool temperature, the relatively
few mosquitoes (at least until the sun went down), and the extra hour we gained
by entering the Central Time Zone.
Tomorrow, we’re
going to Missouri. Our short term plan is to get to Greeley, CO and then decide
whether we’ll go on to Mt. Rushmore and Yellowstone. For now, we’ve got a few
days of driving on the interstate ahead of us.
