About an hour
east of town is where you can visit the local Amish community. Our destination
was Miller’s Family Furniture and Bakery Store. To get there, you go down a
winding country road and across a covered bridge.
The store has
lots of fine handcrafted furniture at pretty reasonable prices. Some of the
hand-hewn pieces (in some cases using reclaimed wood) were very nice. I think
Joni and Dave may be back soon to do more shopping now that Dave has a pickup
truck to bring home the merchandise!
Much easier
to transport are the pastries and cheeses – some of which did not make it all
the way back to the house. We snacked on some fresh pretzels, then took off for
Joni and Dave’s vacation getaway spot along the Ohio River.
They have a
great trailer set up at an RV park about 45 minutes from their house. There is
a covered patio, electricity, running water, a good cell signal and all the
conveniences of home. We sat out on the patio and snacked (again) on some Amish
cheese and then took a tour of the grounds. It’s easy to see why they like spending
as much time as they can out there.
Driving back
to Batavia takes you along more country roads and through several small and
historic towns. We passed a small microbrewery housed in an old firehouse – I think
we’ll come back here later for some tasting.
Once we got
back to the house, we had more snacks (instead of dinner) from our foraging trip.
Afterward, Joni and Mike helped Karen with some strategic planning for the next
leg of our journey. All they needed was a map, some jelly bean position markers,
and the ability to hold their own during the ensuing discussion of travel
options.
Later, while
Dave, Mike and I were downstairs watching an action movie, Karen and Joni took
the opportunity to relax and catch up on things upstairs. All in all, we had
another fun day.
