Day 13 – Kennicott to Valdez, With a Glacial Detour – June 13, 2019

This morning’s view of Kennicott Glacier was even better than yesterday afternoon’s.

We caught the shuttle down to the pedestrian bridge and crossed the Kennicott River.

The McCarthy road was much drier on our return trip, so we snapped a few more photos at the Kuskalna River bridge crossing and also at some other points along the Copper River.

Up near Thompson Pass on the Richardson Highway, we hit some road repair delays (part of the road had washed out) and then spent a couple of hours hiking near the Worthington Glacier.

We got views from above (reached by a most vertiginous trail on a ridge of moraine).

We got views from right at the toe, where large blocks of ice have separated from the main body of the glacier.

And, views of the glacial melt water cascading down the valley.

We pulled into Valdez at about 5:30PM, did some laundry, had some dinner, typed some notes, and prepared for our cruise tomorrow.

Next: Glacier cruise
