Galveston
gave us our first rain of the trip starting before dawn this morning. A few
hours later everything was dried out and we were ready to go. I took a quick
walk down to the beach to snap a few wildlife photos. We’d noticed that large groups
of pelicans had been flying in formation right over our campsite since the
previous afternoon. I couldn’t get any photos of them (either they’re too
quick, or I’m too slow), so I thought I’d try one last time.
No luck again, but
I did have a clear shot at an egret sitting on a post. Just as I pressed the shutter,
some other seabird ‘photo-bombed’ the picture.
We had to get
on I-10 for the first time in many days. It was not a fun drive getting out of
the greater Houston area. Once we crossed the Louisiana state line, however,
the traffic finally started to get lighter.
Karen found
out that the annual Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival was taking place just up
the road from where are staying tonight. Once we set up camp, we went over to
the town of Breaux Bridge. We knew we were there when we saw a mile-long line
of stopped cars on the main road through town. Every bit of open space that
could be used for parking was full for as far as you could see. It was kind of
like a smaller version of the experience of showing up on New Year’s morning at
the Pasadena Rose Parade and hoping to find a parking spot. We tried, but
couldn’t find anything closer than at least a mile away. So, no crawfish and no
zydeco music tonight.
Just outside
our campground, we found a funky little eatery called ‘Billy’s’ that features homemade
boudin and cracklins. We ordered some crawfish and pork boudin, a crawfish
roll-up, some fried corn and cracklins. We took it back to the Aliner in a
bunch of paper bags that were soaked through with oil by the time we opened them
to eat. Mmmm, good! We’ll have to go in later this week and have our cholesterol
tested.
Tomorrow: St. Bernard State Park
