Flora and Fauna on Hike to Haw Knob – August 13, 2019

As planned, Karen flew home yesterday and I extended my trip so I could visit with George and Roxanne at their property in North Carolina. They have 10 acres in the mountains just outside of the unincorporated town of Barnardsville in the western part of the state. They are at about 3000’ elevation in the vicinity of the Pisgah National Forest, which helps to moderate the summertime temperatures. After an eight hour drive down to North Carolina the previous day, it was time to get into the great outdoors.

Today’s activity was a hike up to Haw Knob with George, Roxanne, and their intrepid trail dog, Zone 5. In addition to pointing out the various native plants along the way, they showed me their recent discovery of a decidedly non-native grove of herbaceous flowering plants that had apparently sprouted up just off the trail.

Snack time at Haw Knob.
